What are the common types of back pain?

1. Muscle Strain

This back pain mostly happens when you stress yourself with lifting heavy objects improperly. You will feel a dull ache or maybe a soreness in the muscles, often in the lower back. You might find it hard to move comfortably and freely. The affected area might feel tender to the touch, too. You will need to rest and do gentle stretching. Drugstore pain relievers are an option to help with the pain.

2. Herniated Disc

When one of the soft discs between the bones in your spine bulges or ruptures, it can push on nearby nerves. That also leads to pain. This pain can be sharp and shooting, especially down one leg. You might also feel numbness, tingling, or weakness in the affected area. Treatment options depend upon patients’ needs but may include rest and physiotherapy.

3. Degenerative Disc Disease

Due to aging or due to wear and tear, discs gradually get broken down in your spine. Patients may experience chronic, low-grade pain in the affected area. Symptoms also include stiffness and flexibility being hampered. To avoid this, you need to avoid doing physical activities and rest more. Management typically involves exercises to strengthen the back muscles, along with pain management strategies.

4. Spinal Stenosis

Here, the spaces within your spine get narrow by putting a lot of pressure on one’s spinal cord and nerves. This can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs. And that mostly happens when you are walking or standing for a longer period of time. Resting or bending forward often relieves symptoms temporarily. Treatment for this includes physiotherapy and medications too to ease the pain.

5. Scoliosis

This is the abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. It generally develops in adolescence when the growth spurts and can cause uneven shoulders, hips, or waist. If it is noticed that the curvature worsens, it leads to back pain and stiffness. The approach of the treatment depends on the extent of the curvature and may include observation and bracing.

6. Sciatica

The sensation travels along the path of the sciatic nerve. It goes from your lower back and then down the back of each leg. This pain can be very intense. You may feel like a shooting or burning sensation in that area. One experiences numbness, tingling sensation, or weakness in the affected leg. To get better, one needs to rest and get on pain relief medication. Physiotherapy is also needed to relieve nerve pressure.

Techniques to help with back pain

1. Electrotherapy

This treatment uses small electrical currents to provide:

  • relief from pain
  • aid in the healing process

2. Massage

This involves using hands or tools to adjust and work with the muscles as well as soft tissues in your body. By doing this, you can help to:

  • relax tight muscles
  • reduce pain

3. Ultrasound

To generate heat deep inside your tissues sound waves are used. By doing this, it can help to

  • reduce pain
  • promote healing

4. Heat therapy

Heat is applied to the affected area of your body. By doing this, you help to:

  • relax muscles
  • increase blood flow
  • reduce pain and stiffness

5. Cold Therapy (Cryotherapy)

Cryotherapy is all about applying cold to the affected area. Constricting blood vessels and numbing the sore area helps to reduce:

  • inflammation
  • swelling
  • pain

Ice packs, cold compresses, and cooling gels are suggested as remedies.

6. Laser Therapy (Low-Level Laser Therapy or LLLT)

Laser therapy uses low-intensity lasers or light-emitting diodes (LEDs). It is used to penetrate the skin and tissues. The light energy:

  • reduces pain and inflammation
  • promotes wound healing and tissue repair

Used for treating arthritis, tendonitis, chronic pain and a variety of musculoskeletal issues.

7. Traction Therapy

Traction therapy involves mechanical or manual means to apply a pulling force to the spine. This helps to:

  • release pressure on the spine
  • reduce muscle spasms
  • promote proper alignment

It is often used for herniated discs, sciatica, and degenerative disc disease. Traction can be performed using specialized equipment or through manual manipulation by a physiotherapist.

Exercises

1. Hamstring stretch

This involves stretching the back of your thigh muscles. This helps you to release tension that is affecting your lower back. Imagine reaching towards your toes while sitting or standing, feeling the gentle pull in the back of your leg.

2. Back extension exercise

These exercises involve arching your back gently. This movement helps you to strengthen the spine as well as your muscles.

3. Cat Cow

Inspired by yoga, this movement is all about arching your back alternately. Gently rocking your spine to improve its flexibility and reduce stiffness.

4. Hip flexor stretch

This stretch is for the muscles at the front of your hip. By stretching these muscles, you can relieve pressure on your lower back and feel more relaxed and comfortable.

5. Bird and Dog exercise

In this movement, you extend one arm and the opposite leg while on your hands and knees. By doing this exercise, you strengthen your core muscles and stabilize your spine.

6. Knee rotation

These are exercises to rotate your knees and are done very gently. You can indirectly relieve strain on your lower back. And that also improves your overall posture and mobility.

7. Pelvic tilts

This involves moving your pelvis to tilt it forward and backward. If you want to make your abdominal muscles strong and support your lower back, this is a really good technique. Get rid of back pain and make it more stable and balanced.

8. Piriformis stretching

This stretch targets the piriformis muscle that is located in your buttocks. When you stretch this muscle, the pressure gets relieved on the sciatic nerve and lessens lower back pain. This helps them to feel more relaxed and comfortable.

9. Prone leg lifts

This means you need to lift your legs while lying your face down. This helps to make the muscles of the lower back and buttocks strong. Doing these exercises daily will keep your back strong and supported.
